Correlations to Sunshine State Standards

First Grade

The Nature of Matter
Galaxy Classroom Kindergarten/1st grade program There are 6 themes in the Finders Seeker, Science Keepers program, any 3 can be used at either grade level.
Knows that objects can be grouped according to their physical characteristics (for example, shape, color, texture, form, size).
All 6 Finders, Seekers, Science Keepers (FSSK) themes have sorting and classifying as an underlying focus.
Knows the effects of heating and cooling on solids, liquids and gases.
FSSK theme 1, Dripping, Mixing, Freezing Liquids provides explorations into the effects of heating and cooling on solids, liquids and gases during weeks 5 & 6, pages 40-51.
Knows the physical properties of ice, water, and steam.

Knows that objects are composed of parts that are too small to be seen without magnification (for example, rocks, cookies, string, paper).

FSSK theme 6, Air, Weather, Wind and Stars provides explorations into various objects capable of rolling, sliding, or flying during weeks 1 & 4, pages 14-37.
Understands various ways gravity affects the motion of objects (for example, an object on a ramp, an object that is dropped).
Galaxy Classroom Movers & shakers program for 3rd or 4th grade supports explorations into force and motion for 2 full months.
Knows that vibrations of objects (for example, strings, drumheads, rubber bands) cause sounds.
FSSK theme 3, Hear ItSee ItDo ItProvides explorations into vibration and it's relationship to sound during weeks 1 & 4, pages 14-37.
Processes that Shape the Earth
 
Extends and refines knowledge that the surface of the Earth is composed of different types of solid materials.
GALAXY Classroom Movers & shakers program for 3rd or 4th grade supports explorations into Earth geology for 2 full months.
Knows some kinds of organisms that live on or near the surface of the Earth in land, water, and air.
FSSK theme 5, Critters in Action!, provides explorations into habitats for various land, water, and air organisms during weeks 1 & 8, pages 14-61.
Uses graphic organizers to display weather data and show weather patterns.
FSSK Theme 6, Air, Weather, Wind and Stars provides explorations into charting daily weather changes during weeks 1-4 during weeks 5 & 6, pages 38-49.

Knows that the amount of light reflected by the Moon is a little different every day but the Moon appears the same again about every 28 days. FSSK Theme 6, Air, Weather, Wind and Stars provides explorations into charting changes in the moon during weeks 7 & 8, pages 50-61.

Knows ways organisms change as they grow and mature (for example, as people grow up their size changes).
Both FSSK Themes 4 & 5, Feed the Needs of Pets and Seeds and Critters in Action!, offer explorations into a living organism that exhibits change over time.
Knows that living things grow and change in different ways and in different lengths of time (for example, butterfly, frog, daisy, pine tree). FSSK Theme 4, Feed the Needs of Pets and Seeds, provides observation into the different growth cycles of a variety of plants and animals over the course of the complete Theme.
Knows that plants and animals have adaptations that help them survive in their environment (camouflage, teeth, spines). FSSK Theme 5, Critters in Action, provides explorations throughout the Theme into the adaptations animals adopt for survival.
Understands different ways in which living things can be grouped (for example, plants/animals, edible plants/non-edible plants). FSSK Theme 4, Feed the Needs of Pets and Seeds, provides weekly opportunities for student sorting and classifying of various plants and animals.
Knows that plants and animals are similar but not identical to their parents. Both FSSK Themes 4 & 5, Feed the Needs of Pets and Seeds and Critters in Action!, offer explorations that provide observations of the relationship between parent and offspring both with plants and animals.

How Living Things Interact with Their Environments.
 
Knows that environments have living and nonliving parts. Galaxy Classroom is supported by Xcursions web activities involving living and nonliving parts to environments at this grade level.

The Nature of Science
 
Knows that scientific investigations generally work the same way in different places. All 6 Finders, Seekers, Science Keepers (FSSK) Themes repeat the scientific investigation format giving students insight into the transference of the format from one exploration to another.
Understands the importance of accuracy and repetition in conducting scientific inquiries. All 6 Finders, Seekers, Science Keepers (FSSK) Themes have many investigations involving data collection. Accuracy in data collection is repeatedly stressed throughout each Theme.
Works with others to complete an experiment or to solve a problem. All 6 Finders, Seekers, Science Keepers (FSSK) Themes have many investigations involving collaborative efforts by students' teams.
Listens, records, and compares the ideas and observations of others. Listening to other student team findings, recording data other teams share and observation other teams in action are all part of GALAXY Classroom curricula.
