Theme 2: Science is doing "What Ifs?" To Find and Compare Creature Features

Episode H: "Finding Creature Features"
The cat (and duck) are out of the bag! The Fixer Uppers discover Quizzer's and Kiko's secret. But there are more secrets to uncover. Using a magnifying glass, the kids compare a picture of Betty Boux and that of Lulu LaRue. The features look very similar. Could Betty be the owner of the trunk? Or is H.L. Snidely really Henry LaRue and the owner of the trunk?

Fax Facts
This episode's fax invitation if from Keisha's pet cat, Spike. Make copies of your "What If?" Kids fax paper and have your kids respond to Spike's fax as soon as possible. Encourage your students to bring in pictures of their own pets. Or, they can draw and describe their pets or classroom pets. If they don't have a pet, what kind of pet would they like?
Note: If your kids are faxing photos, have them make a photocopy first. Photos can jam the fax machine. Another option is to scan your students' animal photos and e-mail them to us.

Episode I: "Finding Creature Features (cont.)"
Ants! There are hundreds of them in the entrance hall. How did they get there? What would it be like to be an ant? How can the Fixer Uppers remove the ants without hurting them? Keisha comes up with an idea that sucks the ants up. Then it's off to the park, the ants' new home.
The kids really worked up a thirst in the park. Keisha whips up her famous Holden Health Shake Special. "What if we add marshmallows? What if we add nuts?" The "What If?" Kids go to work making more cool combinations. But remember, "Whatever we make, we have to eat!" Apparently Spike thinks he's above this rule.

Hints & Tips:
  • Preview - Spend a few minutes talking about these things before you watch the next video episode...What do you know about ants? Where do they live? What do they eat? Are they dangerous? Are they important?
  • Postview - After watching the video...Why isn't Spike eating his food? What would you mix in his food to help him eat it? Why would you worry if your pet wasn't eating?
  • Fax - This week's fax invitation asks kids to make their own healthy shake. Brainstorm with the class to see what kinds of things you can add to a shake (there's lots more stuff than just fruit). What about making a shake for Spike? Do vegetables taste good in shakes? Making shakes in your classroom is a perfect time to add some cross-curricular math into your lesson plans!
  • Prior to working with live critters with your students, please do not forget to discuss with them how to show respect to ALL living creatures, big and small. For more information try your local Humane Society. They would love to come to your class to discuss the humane treatment of animals!
