Theme 3: Hear It! See It! Do It!
Episode D: "Shadows At Play"
Hip-hit-hooray! The Science Seekers are planning to perform a surprise shadow play for Marsi! Join the Science Seekers as they investigate the positioning of a light source, shadow puppets, and a screen in order to make their shadow play a birthday surprise success!
Hands-On Investigations: Making Shadows & Shadow Plays
Look for these student outcomes:
- Students position a light, screen, and object for making shadows. (Physical Science)
- Students learn not to look directly at bright lights. (Science in Personal and Social Perspectives)
- Students explore their own questions about light. (Science as Inquiry)
- Students communicate their discoveries by fax or e-mail to others. (Science as Inquiry)
Bright Ideas for Packy's Corner!
At this independent learning center, set up your overhead projector, or have the flashlights on hand for a light source. Set up the screen, as in the two investigations. Making Shadows and Shadow Plays. If space is a problem, simply use a flannel board or the wall for students to cast their shadows on. If darkness is a problem, provide a large box, opened on its side, as a "theater". Include shadow puppets; transparent, opaque, and reflective objects; and objects that represent many geometric shapes.
Allow kids to sort the materials in any way, much like Packy sorts his collections. You could supply sorting labels for the kids or leave the center open-ended for additional exploration.
Seeking More Science?
Be sure to have a large selection of literature books in your classroom on the subject of lights and shadows over the next 2 weeks. You'll find a list of our choices on page 60 of your Teacher's Guide. Don't let this list stop you. Be sure to visit your media center to explore for other books your school already has on these topics.
The logical conclusion to your explorations using the shadow puppets is to have different groups of Science Seekers put on shadow puppet plays for the other Science Seekers. You might have teams of 2 create mini-puppet shows. Can they create other shadow puppets to go with their plays?

Theme 4: Feed the Needs of Pets and Seeds
Episode D: "Pet Detectives: The Case of the Missing Rat"
The pet rat Digger brought to visit is loose in the Lab! By looking for clues to solve the case of Larry, the missing rat, the Science Seekers are observing animal behavior and tracking animal movement. Meeting Larry's needs and the needs of all living creatures requires air, water, food, shelter, and warmth. To find Larry, the Science Seekers must seek out places where Larry might find what he needs.
Video Hands-On Investigations: Hunting for Clues & Trackers-A-Foot
Look for these student outcomes:
- Students use clues to track animal movement. (Life Science)
- Students identify the needs of living organisms. (Life Science)
- Students explore their own questions about tracking animals. (Science as Inquiry)
- Students communicate their discoveries by fax or e-mail to others. (Science as Inquiry)
Get Set for Packy's Corner!
This week you'll want to put the invitation out to all your Science Seekers to have them bring in some of their stuffed animals from home. Packy's Corner will have your kids sorting the stuffed animals in a variety of ways. You may want to supply a variety of labels for sorting, or you may want to have them supply their own sorting criteria. Be sure to drop by the center often to ask what criteria they are using to sort the animals. Some possibilities might be: big and small, have seen and not seen, paws and hooves, climb trees and stay on the ground, or even by colors.
Extended Hands-On Investigation
Ever play "Hot Potato"? Well, Animal Hot Potato is the same game with an animal twist. This is a game everybody in your room can get in on. Be sure to have plenty of space so everyone can sit in a large circle. The only equipment you'll need is a ball that will roll easily across the floor. Before starting the game, explain to everyone just how it's played. Having a few practice turns will help ensure everyone knows how it's played and insures more success for each of your Science Seekers. For specific information on Animal Hot Potato, check page 42 in your Teacher's Guide.
